John F. Griffin, M.D. is a board-certified ophthalmologist, a physician specializing in the medical and surgical treatment of eye diseases. He is also certified by the American Board of Eye Surgery and was one of the first eye surgeons in New York State to receive this voluntary certification in cataract surgery since ABES began in 1989.
Dr. Griffin has practiced in Syracuse and Oneida since 1978, and is, recognized locally for his expertise in cataract surgery. A native of Dublin, Ireland, he was a Harvard University Fellow in Ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston, and an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Albany Medical Center before beginning a private practice in this area.
A graduate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Dr. Griffin
was the recipient of both the prestigious Lyons Medal and
the Fitzsimmons prize in surgery. He continued his education in
America and completed postgraduate studies at Boston
University and the University of Rochester.
Dr. Griffin is a member of several professional organizations
including the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is affiliated
with the Syracuse Specialty Surgery Center, where he performs outpatient surgery, and is an attending Ophthalmologist at Crouse Irving Hospital, Oneida City Hospital and Upstate Medical Center. Dr. Griffin is also co-author of a text book on Ophthalmology and has written a number of papers on topics within his specialty.
